I would just like to say what I think the plot or storyline should move towards. Part of what keeps people interested in a game is definitely the story, and a watered-down one-time thing with no future will probably end in disaster. The events which take place, the maleficent or good forces who show themselves, none of that is vitally important. What's more important is that whatever happens has depth and good character relation. Striving towards defeating some overbearing power can work for now, but it gets old. Involving people into a storyline means they cannot know much of anything about what's going to happen. I like the Darkness idea, because it leaves much room for vague concept development and potential plot twists. Maybe what we thought was going on really isn't what's terrorizing the world! Oh no! We need to come up with something that makes you feel like you're not clicking a character around, but really discovering the story for yourself. It'll just be up to the vets not to spoil it for the noobs.
Also, it would probably be a good idea to make sure that the main event/story is beneficial to both sides of the alignment spectrum. We don't want anyone investing time and patience into becoming a zealous member of the crusade for good only to discover that it wasn't worth it and be filled with regret.
This should be a compilation of many minds and ideas, chiseled down to create something beautiful, what is essentially the heart of the game. And then it is our job to make sure that it is conveyed to the player with the same in mind.
Well building on that idea, You could have the two alignments constantly struggling.
Make it something that doesnt plainly end whe you achieve the 'Ulitmate goal' Just keep making new features which builds upon an already existing one.
Maybe even at a later stage, Split the alignments into two factions, And let players decide whos the better. Having them compete which other to bring the world to evil, Or restore it to good.
I think to really evolve the alignments, We would need to post 3 versions of the game. The game will unfold 1 way for a good character and a different way for the evil character both winning the game from their points of view. The neutral player may be the hardest player to write for.
